Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): A Step-by-Step Guide to Securing Your Account

Updated over a year ago

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a simple and effective way to add an extra layer of security to your online accounts. With 2FA enabled, even if someone gets hold of your password, they won't be able to access your account without the additional code generated by a 2FA app. This article will show you how to activate 2FA protection on your account, including a step to back up your 2FA restore key.

2FA Apps

Before enabling 2FA, you will need to download a 2FA app, such as Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, or 2FAS, on your smartphone. These apps generate the unique 2FA codes you will use to log in to your account.

Additionally, Authy has a user-friendly interface, making it easy to use for people who are new to 2FA. Step 4: Scan the QR code

You will be prompted to scan a QR code on the website. This QR code links your 2FA app to your account. Simply open the 2FA app and scan the QR code to link them.

Step 5: Back up your 2FA restore key

Securing your account with Two-factor Authentication (2FA) adds an additional layer of protection. During this process, it's critical to safeguard your 2FA backup key. This key is your lifeline for account recovery should you ever lose your phone or cannot access your 2FA app. Treat this key as you would any sensitive information—store it securely. We recommend saving it both digitally, in a password-protected file, and physically, perhaps in a locked drawer or safe. Remember, this key enables you to restore 2FA access, ensuring you're never locked out of your account.

Step 6: Enter the 2FA code

Verify enabling 2FA by entering a 2FA code on the next step. Open the 2FA app on your smartphone and enter the code it generates.

That's it! You have now added an extra layer of security to your account by enabling 2FA. Whenever you log in to your account, you will be asked to enter both your password and a 2FA code. This helps to ensure that only you can access your account, even if someone gets hold of your password, and ensure that you have a backup plan in place in case you lose access to your 2FA app. Remember always to keep your 2FA restore key in a safe place.
